Washington Capitals winger and hockey legend Alex Ovechkin revealed today that he thinks he could have already beaten Wayne Gretzky's goal record.

Of course, Gretzky currently hold the all-time career goal record with 894 regular-season tallies. The great eight is not far behind though, just 41 goals away from tying the record, and 42 away from winning it outright. The world-class goal scorer said in a Russian media interview that he would have already broken the record if it were not for the shortened seasons in recent years.
«If there had been no lockout and no pandemic, I think Gretzky's record would have been broken by now, But, unfortunately, such moments happen.»
Given the rate at which Ovi has scored throughout his career, he is probably correct in this judgement. Especially if you count the lockout season in 2005 as well, which would have been his rookie season. However, it appears as though he will still break the record anyways as he showed this season that he can still score with the best of them. One goal in particular stands out from last season as he potted a tally from a sharp angle on a 2-1 from Dylan Strome. Strome just recently revealed his thought process on the play as everyone was expecting him to shoot with Ovi boxed out by Jake McCabe.
Dylan Strome explained why he *refused* to shoot the puck on this 2-on-1 with Alex Ovechkin this season 🤣

Needing just 42 goals to break the all-time record, we very well could see history next season. Ovechkin scored just 31 goals last season after a slow start, but he has recorded 42 goals or more in 13 of his 19 career seasons in the NHL.
NHL milestones we could see this season:
- Alex Ovechkin passing Wayne Gretzky for first all-time in goals with 895 (Gretzky has 894, Ovechkin has 853, Ovechkin is 42 away)
- Sidney Crosby is the ninth-most point-getter in NHL history (46 points away from passing Joe Sakic)
Will Ovi break the great one's record next season? Only time will tell.
