According to well respected NHL insider Frank Seravalli, there are multiple NHL teams that must pay salary cap overage penalties during the 2024-2025 NHL season for penalties made against the salary cap during the 2023-2024 NHL season. A full list of teams and their penalties can be found within the following tweet.
Oilers on Top
Of the 11 teams that are guaranteed to penalized, the Edmonton Oilers sit atop the list with a staggering $3.45 million dollar penalty against next years salary cap.
Some of this overage was indeed planned, as Corey Perry signed an incentives laced deal midway through the NHL season, but signing Connor Brown and having his contract be laced with $3.2 million dollars in performance bonuses for 12 total points was not what Oilers GM Ken Holland had in mind.
Among the teams listed, the Vegas Golden Knights are shockingly absent. The team has come under fire all season for circumventing the salary cap, however GM Kelly Mcrimmon has become a mastermind at circumventing the salary to its absolute limit to avoid such overage penalties.
