Though expectations led many to believe he may be subject to layoffs following Jeff Marek's termination, indications suggest Ron MacLean will likely retire from Rogers Sportsnet when his contract expires in two years.

Ron MacLean has hosted for Rogers Sportsnet for almost four decades, starting his job on Hockey Night in Canada in the late 1980s. However, he has become one of the most divisive company broadcasters on the air. He most notably got flack for his response to Don Cherry's infamous on-air racist rant.
"So, I owe you an apology too that's the big thing that I want to emphasize. I sat there, did not catch it, did not respond [...] Last night was really great lesson to Don and me. We were wrong, and I sincerely apologize."
Ever since this clear misstep, Ron MacLean has been unable to avoid criticism of both his character and broadcasting abilities. Viewers of Hockey Night in Canada have taken to social media to continue their hatred of their longtime host, particularly as a commentator during the 2024 Olympics.
"Hey @CBCOlympics - the LAST person on Earth I want to see or hear from as part of your (incredibly underwhelming in comparison to American and British) coverage of the games is Ron bloody MacLean. Changed channels the INSTANT he appeared. #Paris2024 #OlympicGames"
Yet, his haters seemed hopeful after an independent hockey insider suggested that Jeff Marek's firing was the start of a pattern of layoffs at the company. Unfortunately for them, the same reporter implied that MacLean was more likely to retire in two years when his contract retires after his 40th year with the station.
"Why make that change before the NHL Rogers deal is up in two years?"
Despite the broad distaste, two years is a survivable time to deal with the controversial Hockey Night in Canada host. Additionally, with Ron MacLean toward the end of his contract, a new, golden hosting era could emerge at Sportsnet before fans even know it.
